Excerpt from Chapter 1: The Competitive Psyche
Throughout the history of competitive sports and life itself, the challenge is the competition within us. The simple tensions of the muscles and the separation of physical and mental awareness leaves athletes unable to function at a degree of proficiency needed to obtain the optimal performance desired.
There are many questions to be answered when it comes to the competitive side of the psychology of sports. This book will try to address the important elements which will enable all athletes to understand what constitutes the competitive psyche.

Excerpt from Chapter 2: The Mind
The unconscious mind remembers all things that your conscious mind learned and memorized through constant trials and errors. When you bring your conscious mind into action, you are back in the learning mode, thinking about what it is you are doing. This is how athletes tend to get into trouble. For example, you have a different destination to travel to today, close to your usual destination but with a few new turning directions. Because you have rehearsed your usual route so often, you’re unconscious mind takes you to your memorized destination, because you did not bring the learning conscious mind into action. Your unconscious mind took you to the memorized location.

2. Waking Up for the Contest
It is a proven fact that your body does not wake up ready to go. It takes three to four hours to get in high gear. If you are smart, you will get up in plenty of time to become fully awake on the day you are competing. After you are awake, take the time to warm up your muscles by doing a slight stretch. This action will wake up your body, but do not overdo it.
3. Nutrition
On the night before a competition, eat your meal early in the evening so that it will be completely digested when you awake. If you do have any special nutritional plans, make sure that they are made with the help of a physician, dietitian, coach or trainer. If you start to feel hunger, eat fruit or drink sports drinks. They are assimilated quickly by the body. Do not eat candy. Instead of extra energy, you will be left with less energy. This is a proven fact.
